Paradise Cottage

About the cottage:

Tucked at the end of the path and ten feet (sometimes less) from the mangrove-lined waters of the bay, this air-conditioned queen bed cottage features a nook kitchen with a two burner electric cooktop, an ample convection toaster oven, full size fridge, microwave and coffee maker and an amazing view. It has a private bath with a tiled shower, sink and toilet.

A spacious 160 square foot sleeping and sitting area has a new queen hybrid (foam/innerspring) mattress on poplar wood platform bed, completed with matching tropical designer quilts over soft 100% long-staple cotton sateen sheets and ample fluffy and firm pillows. Within the room, a sitting area surrounds an oriental rug with a classic 1960’s-style leather loveseat, and a wicker high-back chair surrounding a teak trunk coffee table and original Balinese and Javanese art pieces complete this tasteful refuge.

A large LED flat screen TV with full satellite programming and SIRIUS XM radio allows you to enjoy a range of entertainments. A nifty 24″ oscillating wall fan moves air around the cottage. The cottage exudes charm of old Florida with brightly “pickled” (water-base stained) pine plank floors and jalousie windows.

The water view from inside the cottage and from upholstered wooden bench on the sloping covered house-width porch is a delight in the morning sunrise and equally lovely at night.

This cottage has a great story. When Ms. Betty Rose Anne Cooke purchased this property in 1973, it had fallen into disrepair and all of the cottages were, in her words “totally dilapidated.” All of the cottages, that is, except this one, which sits lower on the property than any other. How could that be?

It turns out, this cottage was preserved by virtue of that infernal human vice: gambling! This cottage was home to the secret weekly Cedar Key men’s-only poker game from the late 1960’s until 1973. That was when Ms. Betty Rose “put an end to that nonsense”. Imagining the many oyster- and fishermen’s fortunes won and lost around the game table in this cottage almost led us to call it the Poker Room (which we did for about a week) but the Bird of Paradise bushes out front, Balinese Art inside, and inspirational view of the bay—a lovely vista on this paradise—earned it a new name: Paradise Cottage.

Wouldn’t it be sweet to spend a week…in Paradise?
