Accessibility Statement

Of Can Du Bois, LLC dba Firefly Resort Cottages

Firefly Resort Cottages is a collection of 1950’s cottages built by hand prior to standards and regulations came into existence that help to assure equal access to public facilities for all, including protected classes. Firefly operates within the guidelines and spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) including planning physical alterations to the property and our internet-based services. Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act requires public accommodations to provide goods and services to people with disabilities on an equal basis with the rest of the general public.

Upon purchasing the property in 2018, very few enhancements to the property or cottages had occurred, instead time, decay, and shoddy repairs had rendered the 70 year-old structures less accessible and less stable than when original. Our first years of operations were devoted to repairing these antique structures and addressing deficiencies in the infrastructure at Firefly.

In May 2021, Firefly Resort Cottages conducted a thorough accessibility survey of the property and all the cottages to assess current accessibility, and guide planning for future alterations. The goal of this process is to structure a plan to make the existing facility more usable for people with disabilities including identifying readily achievable barrier removal as per ADA guidelines. The service and tools utilized were developed by Barrier Free Environments, Inc. and Adaptive Environments Center, Inc. who are authorized by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) to develop information and materials on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This first annual survey identified accessibility gaps that will guide solutions in order to fully meet our obligations under the ADA.

Firefly Resort Cottages has made several enhancements to and removed multiple barriers on the property to provide better access, however, persons with disabilities who require the assistance of a motorized or self-powered mobility devices may not find any of our cottages fully accessible, largely due to original design (e.g., raised structures, step up porches, narrow internal doorways, small spaces).

While none of the cottages currently affords completely barrier-free access for guests requiring use of some adaptive mobility devices, Firefly Resort provides the following summary of the results of survey as they apply to each of cottages for rent for the purpose of providing qualitative information for guests with mobility needs to allow the selection of the most appropriate cottage for their needs, if available.

  • Parking: Firefly has one parking space for each cottages, unassigned, and one reserved van accessible space on the left edge of the parking lot. The parking area is level and compressed gravel.
  • Access routes: Pathways on the property are brick, 32″ wide, with uneven spots. They follow the gentle slope of the property which at points exceeds 1:12 slope. These were identified as an initial area for barrier removal and Firefly is currently implementing this work.
  • Writer’s Cottage: Step at entry threshold at entry (4″) and secondary access threshold (8″), 28″ interior door to bathroom, inadequate floor space for mobility device in bathroom, not a roll in shower (1′ threshold).
  • Firefly Cottage: Step up to porch, 2″ entry threshold, beveled 3/4″ interior threshold, 28″ interior door to bathroom, narrow ramp down to bathroom floor (slope 1:4, 22″ long), inadequate floor space for mobility device in bathroom, not a roll in shower (9″ threshold).
  • Paradise Cottage: Roll in entry, 3/4″ beveled entry threshold, one-sided access to bed, 2″ threshold to bathroom, interior door handles non-compliant, narrow passage to loo, non-roll-in shower. The survey identified this cottage for future accessibility upgrades and potential wheelchair accessibility as financial resources are available.
  • Kiwi, Papaya and Pineapple Cottages: These 190 square foot structures have one or two steps up, with no furnishings other than bed cannot provide 5′ T for wheelchair maneuvering, narrow routes of passage, 28″ bathroom doors, inadequate floorspace in bathrooms.
  • Penelope Cottage: 6″ entry threshold, narrow passages, 28″ internal doorways, 3′ threshold to porch, eight steps from ground to porch.
  • Online Access: Equitable online accessibility is a priority and guided Can Du Bois to contract reservation management operations to innroad, Inc., a leader in the online hotel reservation management industry. innroad support access by also making enhancements to our booking engine to follow ADA guidelines. While there is no governing body that provides an official ADA certification, we have taken significant actions to adhere to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, provided by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
