A cottage kitchen for cooking. (Writer's)

Cottage Cooking

When we vacation, we make a point of finding and taking a cooking course and cooking foods from our new locale. From the Tabasco kitchens in Avery Island in Louisiana to the Bumbu Bali cooking school in Ubud, Bali, these experiences have been among the best adventures we’ve had.

Cedar Key doesn’t have a cooking school, or at least not yet or not one we know of, but that doesn’t mean you can’t eat local food well.

The four large cottages (Writer’s, Firefly, Paradise and Penelope) at Firefly Resort have full and fully-updated kitchens with:

  • Cooktop or range
  • Oven or large convection toaster over
  • Toaster or large convection toaster oven
  • Refrigerator
  • Microwave oven
  • Coffee Maker
  • Teapot
  • Sharp knives
  • Cutting board
  • Two Vremi skillets
  • Two covered pots (sauce and stock)
  • Spatulas, tongs, cooking spoons
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Mixing bowl

Writer’s Cottage has a small gas range (the only gas-cooking in the cottages) with four burners, gas oven and broiler. Penelope’s Cottage uses an electric induction cooktop. Firefly and Paradise have two burner electric cooktops.

The smaller cottages (Seatrout, Redfish, Snook) are not suited for cooking, as their kitchenettes are limited to:

  • Microwave
  • Small fridge
  • Toaster
  • Mixing bowl
  • Sharp knives
  • Cutting board

Because these cottages are so tiny and lack hood, they cannot handle the heat, smoke, moisture and aerosols of cooking, but can manage reheating/heating of microwavable foods and toasting bagels, english muffins, bread. We do not allow cooking in the small cottages; most guests use one of the grills on the property for cooking. Or let somebody else cook for you…and do the dishes.
